Week 1, Practice B

Dribbling to beat players

Equipment, about 60 min total

  • 1 ball per player
  • 20 flat cones
  • 2 goals or pugg goals
  • Bibs for 1 team
  • 6 tall cones for gates
  1. 1Arrival play

    Warm-up · 8 min
Balls out, play as you arriveAABB

    Setup

    1. Field and goals set up before players arrive.
    2. Balls out. Whoever is here plays right away, teams even as kids arrive.
    3. No coaching, no lines: the game starts the practice.

    Coaching points

    • Greet every player by name as they join.
    • Watch who is confident with the ball today.

    Easier or harder

Easier: smaller area so touches come fast. Harder: nothing, it is play.

  2. 2Cones Beat Streak

    Warm-up · 10 min
One ball, beat as many cones as you canA

    Setup

    1. Scattered cones, every player with a ball, 60 second rounds.
    2. Score a point for every cone you dribble past cleanly.
    3. Knock a cone over, lose a point. Honest counting.
    4. Play 4 rounds, crown a champion.

    Coaching points

    • Change of direction with both feet.
    • The best dribblers touch the ball every step.

    Easier or harder

Easier: wider cones. Harder: two players share the same cones.

  3. 31v1 to Two Goals

    Fun game · 14 min
    1v1, score in either goalAB

    Setup

    1. A 20x15 yard field with a small goal on each corner at both ends.
    2. One attacker, one defender, coach serves the ball to start.
    3. Attacker scores in either goal. Defender scores by dribbling out.
    4. Play 45 seconds, then swap roles. Keep rotating quickly.

    Coaching points

    • Use the goal the defender leaves open.
    • Change of pace beats fancy feet: slow, then burst.

    Easier or harder

Easier: 2 goals only, one per end. Harder: both players can score in any goal.

  4. 41v1 Ladder

    Fun game · 14 min
Win your duel, move up the ladderABAB

    Setup

    1. Set 3 to 5 small fields side by side, each with a small goal at one end.
    2. Two lines of players. Field 1 plays first, winners move up, others stay.
    3. Coach serves a ball to start each 45 second duel.
    4. Most wins up the ladder after 10 minutes.

    Coaching points

    • Attack the defender at speed: a slow duel is easy to defend.
    • One move, then go. Do not dance on the ball.

    Easier or harder

Easier: bigger goals. Harder: losing scorer does 3 step-backs, winner feeds next ball.

  5. 5Small-sided game, 6v6

    Match · 14 min
a goal after a 1v1 win counts doubleAAAABBBB

    Setup

    1. Split the team into equal 6v6 teams with bibs.
    2. Small field with a small goal at each end. Balls behind every goal.
    3. Theme condition: a goal after a 1v1 win counts double.
    4. Roll new balls in when one goes out. Keep the game flowing.

    Coaching points

    • Praise the theme when you see it, once, briefly.
    • Let the game teach: no stoppages for coaching lectures.

    Easier or harder

Easier: bigger goals, no goalkeepers. Harder: winners stay on, or a two-touch rule for a round.
